The Future of AI in Europe and Beyond

Description:

As AI research and applications are generating unprecedented impact in industry and society, as companies and governments are investing billions into AI systems and services, serious questions remain regarding the responsible development and use of AI technology. In particular, despite large-scale investments, European AI capabilities are still lagging behind those of the US and China, and it remains unclear when and how AI systems based on European quality standards and values will become available.

In this session, we will address questions such as:

  • What kind of AI do we need and should we want, especially in realms where AI systems physically interact with their environment and with us?
  • How can we best overcome the limitations and weaknesses of existing AI systems, such as ChatGPT?
  • How can we separate hype and excitement from serious scientific and technological progress?
  • Why should we pursue the development and broad use of artificial intelligence in the first place?
  • To which extent is there a lack of epistemic diversity with everybody betting on the same horse? What can or should be done to change this?
  • Are there reasons to worry about the growing gap in AI capabilities between Europe and the US?
  • How can AI technology help to maintain or increase the competitiveness of European economies?
  • Should we be worried about the growing technological dependency on AI “made elsewhere”, notably in the public sector?
  • To the degree that there is reason to worry, what should we do about it?
  • Is Europe (the EU, member states, associated countries) on “the right path”?
  • Where do we see progress in the right direction and where reasons for concern?

We are aiming for a lively discussion with substantial participation from the audience.
